Italian Line Infantry - Victrix 28mm

I have finished doubling my Italian Line Infantry and now have four units of them. Been putting them off because the figures are the early Victrix figures which require a lot of assembly, and painting of yet more white uniforms. Virus lockdown, which looks like being almost over here in New Zealand thankfully, has been a good excuse to get these done!

The Italian infantry had a complicated system with slightly different combinations of green, red and white for facings of their uniforms, and there is a lot of source inconsistency as to what regiment was wearing what during different time periods.  I cheated here and just painted all of these in the 3rd/5th regiment scheme for ease of painting and putting on the table and storing.  Facings are mostly green.

If I do more Italians, (perhaps using Perry) I will do another four units with more of a red theme to the facings.

While I've done four units of 36, for the scale we most commonly play at they will be fielded as six units of 24. This gives me four line units like the following.

Plus a combined Grenadier unit.

And a combined Voltigeur unit.

I also did up these four skirmisher bases. Once again from the Victrix kit, and I have plenty left over for more skirmishers and command.

Next up is some Italian artillery. Two 1804-1812 Victrix French artillery sets are being used for these, to get the 8pdr and 12pdr guns and earlier uniform. After that perhaps some Italian light infantry.

Thanks for looking! Hope you are all getting through this damnable pestilence ok, keep well!

  1. Lovely job on the Italians Mark. I know what you mean about Victrix...they are nice figures and let you build units of unique poses, but they are a bit fiddly for my liking, I prefer the fewer, simpler to assemble poses of Perry or Warlord plastics

    1. Thanks Ross and agreed, the later Victrix infantry (Austrians and French Guard) have far less assembly involved, and a better mix of types for wargaming, and are some of my favourite kits.

  2. Great job! I have Zucchi's Brigade (4 btg 5th rgt line and 2 btg of 2nd light + 4 guns of atillery). Now I'm working on the 2 btg of Velites..all Victrix and the the new box of elites from Perry.

    1. Thanks! Sounds good, I've got 4 boxes of new Perry sitting there waiting to be Neapolitan/Italian or something else...

  4. Very nice and the brushwork looks very sharp indeed. I know I am probably missing out, but I just don't have the patience to assemble figures and find cleaning mould lines enough of a task.

    1. Thanks Lawrence, and indeed the assembly on these is a bit over the top, for wargaming anyway!

  5. Italian allies are one of my faves, lots of colour and variation. Have a look at the Milan Civic Guard in light blue. These are a great addition to your collection, they really "pop".
    Best wishes,

  8. Very, very impressive! Beautifully painted troops, and a lot of them. I think the new Perry French will be a good match for these too.

  10. They are simply superb Mark. I've always been fond of the Italians in this period and actually had a large army of Eugene's for the 1809 campaign during our clubs old Empire III days in 15mm. You have done a wonderful job on these and I am very envious!

  11. Mark, great to see that you have used your incarnation well. I love the Victrix figures too, but there are so many bits and that drives me mad!

  12. They are really excellent, Mark! I have gotten very good use from my Italians over the years. By all means do some Light infantry - their uniforms are kind of fun to do with the different facing colors by regiment. I rather prefer the early uniforms, which was basically like the French substituting green for dark blue, but it was short lived and almost all of the actions we're interested in were fought in these white uniforms, so that's how mine are. Another interesting unit is the Guardia di Onore; I had fun doing those. Talk about different colors!

    1. Thanks Peter, I hadn't realised there was that variety with the Guardia! Just been looking at your site and that Napoleonic Italian one you mention. Great stuff :)

  13. Lovely looking Italians! I've got a pile of these victrix figures assembled and was considering doing some as Italian and this has pushed me over the edge! Nice figures but I never want to assemble any ever again!

  17. I got to say it's still one of the great value for money kits . So many parts and leftovers for kitbashing . I just realised I had enough in the same unused kit to make 8 more figures . Full of grenadier and Voltiguer headwear . None of them Historical lol . But I have to say I loved your Grenadier Battalion concept

    1. Thanks Rusty, yes you do get a lot of great bits in it :)
And yes quite fond of the Grenadiers, they are actually very similar to the Guard Velite Battalion too I think.
