More Austrians enter the fray. Austrian Grenzers from Perry Miniatures. These are metal models, which are ok, though still quite a lot of flash compared to some Murawski Miniatures I picked up recently. Of course they are also cheaper than Murawski so can't complain really!
I'm also not a fan of this Grenz uniform! It has annoying to paint Hungarian trousers with braiding and stripes, and then ugly brown jackets on top of that. Painting and basing is also made awkward because they have their muskets held at all sorts of sloppy angles - which makes sense given they are somewhat irregular troops of course! ;)
Anyway enough ranting, here they are... I've done one unit with yellow facings and the other with green facings.
Excellent looking units, I quite like the Grenzer uniform, its so different form other Napoleonic colours, I mean when was the last time you used brown on a coat?
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray! Last time I used brown coat - the artillery which for some reason didn't annoy me as much!
DeleteThey still look pretty good to me Mark! The red helps to make them colourful!
ReplyDeleteCheers Rodger!
DeleteYou have done a great job on them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave!
DeleteLovely job on this beautiful uniform, very impressive units!
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil!
DeleteGreat job! I like the larger stands to protect the muskets in the firing poses.
ReplyDeleteCheers Pancerni, yes I couldn't think of any other way of doing it that would protect them!!
DeleteKwitcherbitchen, Mark! :-)
ReplyDeleteThese came out looking great - especially the work on the "annoying" Hungarian knots. I am also a fan of the uniform of the Grenzer - they are really quite colorful, especially in the sea of Austrian White, and the brown coats are fairly unique. Indeed, considering that there were 17 regiments of Grenz, I think they are underrepresented in your army at present, so you need to paint at least another couple more units of them! :-)
Cheers Gonsalvo, and as to doing more... well that might have to wait a while!!
DeleteWow - these are lovely! I never would've imagined how colorful these troops could be - what with the blue trousers and the red bed rolls, not to mention the green leaf in the shako.
ReplyDeleteCheers Dean, yes I guess they are still colourful despite the jackets!
DeleteThe extra effort on the stripes and braids on the trousers brings the unit to life!
ReplyDeleteThanks MurdocK, yes those stripes and braids take a while!
DeleteChasseur, it's cool. But red shouldn't have been much. "Kabannitsa" not all carried soldiers. The majority had usual gray overcoats.
ReplyDeleteAh really? I didn't realise as everything I read said they were red, thanks!
DeleteThe red things are cloaks rolled up on top of the packs. They could have boring grey greatcoats, too, but what fun is that.
DeleteTransylvanian units (Siebenburgers) appear to have had black cloaks - how weird/cool is that?
Thank for the clarification Peter! It would be nice to get some figures compatible with Perry that are wearing the cloaks :)
DeleteVery impressive, the highly detailed minis are superb on their own, but the mass effect is astonishing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks RMacedo!
DeleteI know what you mean about the Hungarian knots - all the same these are beautiful miniatures.
ReplyDeleteYes those knots are something to avoid! Thanks Ken!
DeleteSome Grenz regiments wore white coats. The Foundry figures are very good, I painted some of those in white and some in brown.
ReplyDeleteCheers Alan, yes I might add some in white, though the brown at least helps distinguish them from Hungarians I suppose :)
